I am an independent Bariatric Nurse Specialist who is passionate about providing support, advocacy and education related to moving beyond the label of obesity and on to living the healthiest life you can enjoy. Irrespective of whether you have had surgery or not. My experience and research have demonstrated that weight is not the choice it is assumed to be.
My aim is to provide you with skills and strategies that will support you wherever you are in relation to Weight Loss/Metabolic Surgery. This could be contemplating surgery or ten years after. Whilst it is clear the experience of surgery has specific stages and many people experience similar things, there is not a one size fits all umbrella to your experience. Each individual brings to the experience of surgery their own unique story. Struggling physically or emotionally somewhere along the way is to be expected and I am here to help.
I have developed a program that uses my clinical experience of the anatomy and physiology of weight maintenance, the physical and psychological changes that surgery creates and the psychological aspects of self-care. Alongside this I incorporate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as the fundamental framework to aid in adopting a healthy lifestyle that works for each individual. My practice is fully evidence based from current scientific understanding and I will refer on to appropriate specialists if you are not within my current scope of practice.
I have been working in the specialty of Weight Loss Surgery/ Metabolic surgery since 2007. The first nine years were at Counties Manukau Health, I left there in February 2016 to concentrate on my study and developing more cohesive support for those struggling pre and post metabolic surgery. After finishing my masters study in June 2016. I set up Beyond Obesity which provides comprehensive support pre and post-surgery, non-surgical support encompassing Health at Every Size principles, education for Health Care Professionals around how to approach obesity without prejudice and shame, consultancy and advocacy associated with policy related to obesity.
